Course Description
SOLAR TECHNOLOGY
Solar energy is the harnessing of energy from
sunlight, which can be converted into thermal (heat) or electrical energy
through various technologies. Solar panels, or photovoltaic (PV) cells, capture
sunlight and convert it directly into electricity. This process relies on
materials within the panels that release electrons when exposed to sunlight,
generating an electric current.
- Basic Principle: Solar PV
systems work based on the photovoltaic effect, where materials (typically
silicon) absorb photons from sunlight, exciting electrons and creating an
electric current. Solar panels are made up of many individual PV cells
that work together to generate a flow of electricity.
- Key Components
of Solar PV Systems:
- PV Panels: The primary
component that captures sunlight and converts it into direct current (DC)
electricity.
- Inverters: Convert DC
electricity from the panels into alternating current (AC), which is
compatible with the electric grid and home appliances.
- Battery
Storage (if applicable): Stores excess electricity
generated for use during times without sunlight (e.g., at night).
- Balance of
System (BOS): Additional components like mounting structures,
wiring, fuses, and disconnects that are necessary for the safe and
efficient functioning of the solar system.
